Volleyball Outlasts Southern Vermont in Five Sets

CHICOPEE, Mass. – After trading the opening four sets back-and-forth, the Elms College women's volleyball squad registered a 15-11 win in the final set to defeat the visiting Mountaineers, 3-2 (25-17, 20-25, 25-19, 6-25, 15-11), in a New England Collegiate Conference match at Picknelly Arena Tuesday night.

The Blazers had four players record eight or more kills in the match, led by a double-double from junior outside hitter Alex Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) with a team-high 12 kills and 20 digs. Senior outside hitter Christine Searles (Tolland, Mass.) tallied 11 kills and 15 digs, while freshmen Kate Moriarty (Agawam, Mass.) and Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) each added eight kills. Junior setter Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) dished out a game-high 34 assists with 19 digs and four aces, and senior libero Caitlin Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) snared a game-high 32 digs with four assists, three kills and two aces.

The Mountaineers were paced by senior outside hitter Jessica Delgado (Los Angeles, Calif.) with a game-high 17 kills with a team-high 21 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Brin Goldman (Christianshed, Virgin Island) chipped in five kills, while junior setter Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, Calif.) had a double-double with 20 digs and 13 assists.

With the win, the Blazers improved to 4-13 overall and 1-1 in NECC play, while Southern Vermont dropped to 4-11, and 0-2 on the season. Elms will be back on the court in a doubleheader at Becker College on Saturday. The Blazers will face Becker in NECC play at 11:00 a.m. followed by a non-conference tilt against Wentworth at Becker.
