Volleyball Drops a Pair at Cardinal Classic

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Elms College volleyball squad battled in a pair of losses in the final day of action at the 2014 Cardinal Classic, hosted by SUNY-Plattsburgh in Memorial Hall Saturday afternoon. The Lady Blazers fell to host Plattsburgh State (18-25, 21-25, 14-25), and then dropped a tilt with Sage (7-25, 19-25, 12-25).

In a battle with Plattsburgh State, sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) and freshman middle hitter Kate Moriarty each tallied a team-high seven kills, while Mack snared a team-high 13 digs. Junior middle hitter Christine Searless (Tolland, Mass.) added five kills and seven digs. Junior setter Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) dished out a game-high 21 assists with seven digs and two kills.

Plattsburgh State was led by junior middle hitter Emily Miller with a game-high 11 kills, while freshman opposite Miranda Sheffer added a double-double with 10 kills and a game-high 15 digs. Senior setter Meghan Clifford recorded a game-high 27 assists with eight digs.

Against Sage College, Mack led the Blazers offense with eight kills and eight digs. Searless snagged a team-high 12 digs with six kills, while junior libero Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.). had eight digs and two kills. Bolton doled out 17 assists with an ace.

Sage College was led by a three-pong attack of senior middle hitter Rachel Martin, junior middle hitter Mickey Mango, and sophomore middle hitter Michayla Berard who notched seven kill apiece. Sophomore outside hitter Siena Wilder had 11 digs, and sophomore setter Rachel Liebig totaled 26 assists and five aces.

The Blazers move to 1-9 on the season. Elms will return to the court when they travel to St. Joseph's (Conn.) for a non-conference matchup Tuesday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
