Volleyball Splits Home Tri-Match

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's volleyball squad split a pair of games in a tri-match with visiting Rhode Island College and Castleton State College at Picknelly Arena Saturday afternoon. The Blazers fell to Rhode Island College in four set (20-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-25), and then defeated Castleton State, 3-1 (22-25, 29-27, 25-16, 25-20).

Against the Anchorwomen, senior outside hitter Christine Searles (Tolland, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) registered a double-double with a game-high 17 kills  with 16 digs, three blocks and two aces. Freshman middle hitter Kate Moriarty (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) added eight kills, while freshman defensive specialist Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass./SABIS International Charter) tallied seven kills. Junior setter Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) racked up a season-high 33 assists with 10 digs and three aces. Senior libero Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) grabbed a game-high 27 digs, and junior outside hitter Alexandra Mack (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) had 22 digs and three aces.

Rhode Island College had three players with double-digit kill totals, led by junior outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf with a team-high 14 kills with 12 digs. Junior outside hitter Lauren Palazzini. chipped in 11 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Sierra Smith had 10 kills.

In the win over Castleton, Searles recorded her seventh consecutive double-double with a game-high 13 kills and 21 digs. Mack totaled 16 digs, nine kills and five aces, while Connors had eight kills and two aces. Freshman setter Jessica Martin (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) dished out career-high 21 assists, while Larvey served up a season-high six aces with 25 digs in the win.

Castleton was paced by senior middle hitter Kaylee Pratt and sophomore middle hitter Brittany Brayman with 11 kills apiece. Brayman added 13 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Tedeschi had 10 kills.

The Blazers move to 3-12 on the season, while Rhode Island improved to 5-7 overall with a pair of wins on the day, and Castleton State sits at 4-8. Elms will open their NECC conference schedule against Lesley at Picknelly Arena on Saturday, October 4th. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
