Blazers Overcome Deficit, Top Mountaineers

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- Trailing 2-1, the Elms College women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals to defeat Southern Vermont 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

With fifteen minutes left, Gigi Thibault (South Hadley, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal for the Blazers.

Elms drew first blood with a goal by Alizaya Clark (Springfield, Mass.) just eight minutes into the first half.  However, the Mountaineers would score the next two goals, one on a penalty shot by Maddie Gibney (Albany, N.Y.) at the end of the first half and one by Kaidin Gauthier (Bennington, Vt.) five minutes into the second half.

The Blazers' deficit would only last two minutes, however, when Reilly Jodoin (South Hadley, Mass.) scored a goal in the upper-ninety to tie it at 2-2.  Thibault's goal broke the tie soon after to take the 3-2 victory.

With the NECC tournament approaching, the Blazers (9-4-1, 5-1 NECC) host Bates on Sunday and Bay Path on Oct. 17 before two road games to end the year, at New England College Oct. 20 and at Eastern Nazarene Oct. 24.

The Mountaineers (5-6-2, 3-3 NECC) are back home against Becker on Tuesday, followed by games at Dean College Oct. 20 and Bay Path Oct. 24.

Elms honored their seven seniors before the game: Thibault, Jodoin, Shannon Denault (Chicopee, Mass.), Christina Leonardo (Enfield, Conn.), Kelsey Shea (Belchertown, Mass.), Danielle Asklar (Berlin, Conn.), and Ashley Casiano (Smithtown, N.Y.).
