Goodwin Strikes Twice As Blazers Top Nighthawks

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. - Elms College freshman Sydney Goodwin (Lawrence, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, including the first tally and game-winner in the Blazers' 4-0 victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Wednesday afternoon at Charlestown High School Complex in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer action.

Blazer senior Kelsey Shea (Belchertown, Mass.) added three assists for Elms. Senior Christina Leonardo (Enfield, Conn.) and junior Jordan Bailey (Monson, Mass.) each added a goal.

After over an hour of shutout soccer, Goodwin broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute. Goodwin received a pass from the back line by Shea and was in on a breakaway behind the Nighthawk defense. Goodwin struck a flawless shot into the right corner, giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

The Blazers doubled the lead in the 80th minute on Leonardo's first of the season. On a Shea free kick, Leonardo met the eventual goal with a powerful header, giving Elms a 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later in the 82nd minute, Goodwin scored her second of the game for a 3-0 lead. Bailey added her goal in the final minute for the 4-0 score.

Elms junior Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, Conn.) made one save and improves to 8-4 with the win. Nighthawk senior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) made 15 saves in the loss.

The Nighthawks drop to 1-11 (0-5 NECC) and return to play on Saturday evening against Mitchell College at 5:30 p.m. The Nighthawks will celebrate Senior Night before the game.

Elms improves to 8-4-1 (4-1 NECC) and hosts Southern Vermont on Saturday at noon.
