Goodwin Delivers Another OT Winner As Blazers Top WNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Blazer freshman Sydney Goodwin scored her second overtime game-winner in three games as the Elms College women's soccer team knocked off cross-town rival Western New England 2-1 in double-overtime on Wednesday.

The Blazers (5-2-1) and Golden Bears (3-3-1) seemed destined to draw as the game crept into the 109th minute but with just 1:38 remaining in the second overtime Goodwin (Lawrence, Mass.) lifted Elms to its third consecutive victory.

Elms got on the board first on Wednesday when Jordan Bailey (Monson, Mass.) scored in the 26th minute. The Blazers maintained the 1-0 lead until late in the game when Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) scored the equalizer for the Golden Bears in the 82nd minute, forcing overtime.

Western New England held a 25-4 advantage in shots in the game and an 8-3 lead in shots on goal, but the Blazers proved to be more accurate, converting two of their three shots on goal. Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, Conn.) came up with seven saves in the win for Elms while counterpart Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) made one save.

The Blazers return home on Sept. 22 to host conference-rival Lesley at 1:30 p.m. Elms and Lesley have combined to win the last six New England Collegiate Conference championships. WNE will visit Nichols on Sept. 22.
