Swimming Battles Mount Saint Mary in Road Meet

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Elms College men's and women's swimming squads showed good performances in a road meet at Mount Saint Mary's College Saturday afternoon. The men's team was edged out, 126-121, while the women fell, 206-54.

For the women's team, freshman Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) won the 50 meter backstroke in a time of 30.76, while placing third in the 100 meter backstroke (1:10.03) and the 100 meter individual medley (1:13.00). Sophomore Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) took third in the 1000 meter freestyle (13:51.77), fourth in the 500 meter freestyle (6:52.05), and fifth in the 200m freestyle (2:41.85). Junior Crystal Archibald (Portland, Maine) finished third in the 50 meter breaststroke (39.65), fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:28.03), and fifth in the 50 meter butterfly (41.01). Sophomore Abigail Will  (Hopkinton, Mass.) claimed third in the 100 meter butterfly, fourth in the 100 meter individual medley (1:14.63), and sixth in the 100 meter freestyle (1:07.05). Junior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) posted a trio of fourth-place finishes in the 50 meter butterfly (32.51), 100 meter freestyle (1:04.29), and fourth in the 200 meter freestyle (2:19.61). Freshman Rachael Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.) was fourth in the 50 meter breaststroke (40.91), and fifth in the 50 meter freestyle (30.09) and 100 meter freestyle (1:06.67). Senior Erika Aponte (Palmer, Mass.) took fourth in the 50 meter freestyle (29.25) and fifth in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:35.18), while junior Miranda Pratt (Southington, Conn.) finished fifth in the 500 meter freestyle (7:40.96). Freshman Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) placed fifth in the 50 meter backstroke (34.97) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:17.26), along with sixth in the 50 meter freestyle (30.11). FreshmanMackenzie Marsters (Somers, Conn.) claimed a trio of sixth-place finishes in the 50 meter breaststroke (43.25), 100 meter individual medley (1:29.06), and the 500 meter freestyle (7:57.01). Freshman Molly Gagnon (Hamden, Mass.) took sixth in the 200 meter freestyle (3:19.18), and sophomore Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) was sixth in the 50 meter backstroke (40.53). In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of Connors, Archibald, Will and Aponte claimed third with a time of 2:09.64. In the 200 meter freestyle relay, the team of Panetta, Carrier, Coleman, and Aponte took third (1:57.76), while the team of Gagnon, O'Connell, Pratt,and Marsters finished fourth (2:27.13).


In the men's events, freshman Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) registered a trio of victories, winning the 50 meter butterfly (26.31), the 100 meter butterfly (57.47), and the 100 meter freestyle (51.30). Sophomore Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) recorded first-place finishes in the 500 meter freestyle (5:25.88) and the 1000 meter freestyle (11:29.50), along with second in the 200 meter freestyle (1:56.58). Junior Misha Kuyuzov (Swampscott, Mass.) claimed first in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:08.67) and the 100 meter individual medley (1:01.08), and second in the 50 meter breaststroke (31.05). Junior James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) took second in the 50 meter backstroke (28.60), second in the 100 meter backstroke (1:03.13), and third in the 100 meter butterfly (1:04.17). Freshman Michael DiPasquale (Meriden, Conn.) finished third in the 50 meter butterfly (28.58), fourth in the 50 meter backstroke (31.10), and fifth in the 50 meter freestyle (26.99). Freshman DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) placed fourth in the 100 meter individual medley (1:07.63), the 200 meter freestyle (2:12.81), and the 500 meter freestyle (6:02.05). Fellow freshman Rick Giordano (Agawam, Mass.) also posted three fourth-place finishes in the 50 meter breaststroke (41.26), the 100 meter breaststroke (1:45.09), and the 100 meter backstroke (1:27.57). Senior Niels Thomsen (Southington, Conn.) was fourth in the 50 meter freestyle (25.23), fifth in the 100 meter freestyle (58.50), and fifth in the 200 meter freestyle (2:16.04). Freshman Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) finished fifth in the 50 meter backstroke (48.25), and sixth in the 50 meter freestyle (32.90) and the 100 meter freestyle (1:16.96). In the 200 meter medley rellay, the team of Grippo, Kuyuzov, Bergstrom, and Cirillo won the event in a time of 1:48.81, while the team of Thomsen, DiPasquale, Giordano, and Sherman took second in the 200 meter freestyle relay (1:47.76).

The men's and women's swimmers will return to action when they host Norwich in a meet at Patryka Natatorium on Saturday, January 17th at 1:00 p.m.
