Swimming Falls at Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming teams suffered a setback in a road meet at Bridgewater State Wednesday evening. The men's team fell, 136.5-119.5, while the women were defeated, 139-114.

For the men's side, sophomore Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) and junior James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) each posted a trio of first-place finishes. Cirillo won the 100 meter freestyle (54.91), the 200 meter freestyle (1:58.79), and the 500 meter freestyle (5:25.25). Grippo placed first in the 100 meter backstroke (1:02.45), the 400 meter individual medley (4:59.92), and 1000 meter freestyle (11:39.64). Freshman Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) finished first in the 50 meter freestyle (23.14) and the 50 meter butterfly (25.66), along with a second-place finish in the 50 meter breaststroke (31.37). Senior Niels Thomsen (Southington, Conn.) was second in the 100 meter freestyle (56.34), third in the 50 meter freestyle (25.87), and third in the 200 meter freestyle (2:12.74). Junior Misha Kuyuzov (Swampscott, Mass.) placed second in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:09.78), third in the 50 meter breaststroke (31.73), and third in the 50 meter butterfly (28.38). Freshman Michael DiPasquale (Meriden, Conn.) took third in the 50 meter backstroke (30.86), and fourth in the 50 meter freestyle (27.51) and the 50 meter butterfly (28.90). Freshman DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) claimed third in the 100 meter butterfly (1:05.79), fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:19.05), and fourth in the 400 meter individual medley (5:22.16). Freshman Rick Giordano (Agawam, Mass.) was fourth in the 500 meter freestyle (8:20.33), fifth in the 50 meter backstroke (38.47), and fifth in the 100 meter backstroke (1:27.71), while freshman Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) was sixth in the 50 meter backstroke (50.68), the 100 meter freestyle (1:17.98), and the 200 meter freestyle (2:53.12).

On the women's side, freshman Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) registered a trio of victories, taking first in the 50 meter backstroke (31.12), 100 meter backstroke (1:10.32), and the 100 meter individual medley (1:13.12). Freshman Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) posted a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 meter breaststroke (38.90) and the 100 meter freestyle (1:05.98), along with a fourth-place finish in the 50 meter freestyle (29.90). Sophomore Abigail Will (Hopkinton, Mass.) won the 50 meter butterfly with a time of 34.23, and placed second in the 500 meter freestyle (6:20.68), and fourth in the 100 meter butterfly (1:17.01). Sophomore Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) claimed second in the 1000 meter freestyle (13:44.27), third in the 50 meter butterfly (41.64), and fourth in the 500 meter freestyle (6:49.94). Junior Crystal Archibald took third in the 50 meter breaststroke (39.27), 100 meter breaststroke (1:29.11), and the 100 meter individual medley (1:24.61). Sophomore Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) placed second in the 50 meter butterfly (38.55), and fourth in the 50 meter backstroke (39.08) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:25.41). Junior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) finished second in the 100 meter individual medley (1:15.24), third in the 200 meter freestyle (2:20.77), and fifth in the 100 meter butterfly (1:21.59). Senior Erika Aponte (Palmer, Mass.) placed third in the 50 meter freestyle (29.12) and fourth in the 100 meter freestyle (1:08.60), while junior Miranda Pratt (Southington, Conn.) recorded a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 meter freestyle (1:19.09) and the 500 meter freestyle (7:40.22). Freshman Rachael Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.) took fifth in the 50 meter freestyle (30.33), 100 meter breaststroke (1:31.44), and 200 meter freestyle (2:24.94). Freshman Mackenzie Marsters (Somers, Conn.) placed fifth in the 50 meter breaststroke (44.01), sixth in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:41.78), and sixth in the 200 meter freestyle (42.87). In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of Connors, Archibald, Panetta, and Aponte claimed second with a time of 2:11.88. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Will, Carrier, Coleman, and Aponte won the event with a time of 2:00.78, while the team of Marsters, O'Connell, Gagnon, and Carterud took second with a time of 2:21.61.

The Blazers will return to the pool in a road meet at Mount Saint Mary's on Saturday, January 10th at 1:00 p.m.
