Swim Teams Edged By St. Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine – The Elms College men's and women's swim teams delivered a strong showing against St. Joseph's (ME), with the women's team falling to the Monks 141-111, and the men's team been edged out 116-102 at the Harold Alfond Center Pool Saturday afternoon.

For the women's side, freshman Ashlee Connors (Springfield, Mass.) qualified for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships with a victory in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 31.17. Connors won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:10.96, and finished second in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:45.77. Sophomore Abigail Will (Hopkington, Mass.) delivered a NEISDA qualifying performance in the 100 yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 1:09.50. Will captured the 50 yard butterfly event with a time of 32.18, and took second in the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.84). Senior Erika Aponte (Palmer, Mass.) won the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 28.92, along with a third-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (2:29.18), and a fifth-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (1:07.85). Junior Kim Panetta (Belchertown, Mass.) took second in both the 50 yard butterfly (32.53) and the 100 yard butterfly (1:14.09). Sophomore Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) was second in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 13:48.08, third in the 500 yard freestyle (6:53.69), and fourth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:33.89). Freshman Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) took third in the 50 yard backstroke (34.88), third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:28.63), and fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (1:04.95). Freshman Rachael Coleman (West Hartford, Conn.) claimed third-place finishes in the 50 yard breaststroke (40.02) and the 50 yard freestyle (30.53), and took fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:30.27). Freshman Mackenzie Marsters (Somers, Conn.) finished fourth in the 50 yard breaststroke with a time of 42.97, along with sixth-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (33.23) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:37.27). Sophomore Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) posted a pair of fourth-place times in the 100 yard backstroke (1:22.40) and the 500 yard freestyle (7:12.01), along with a fifth-place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (3:08.19). Freshman Molly Gagnon (Hamden, Mass.) placed sixth in the 50 yard backstroke (49.18), and sixth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:47.58). The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Will, Carrier, Panetta, and Aponte won the event with a time of 1:54.72), while the 200 yard medley relay squad of Connors, Coleman, Panetta and Caterrud finished second (2:16.74). 

On the men's side, sophomore Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) posted victories in the 200 yard freestyle (1:57.85), and the 500 yard freestyle (5:20.12). Freshman Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) won the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 23.42, and the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 53.26, along with a second-place finish in the 50 yard butterfly (26.34). Junior James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up a uncontested victory in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:43.02), while adding a second-place finish in the 1000 yard backstroke (1:04.26) and fourth-place finish in the 200 yard individual medley (2:24.82). Freshman DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) qualified for the NEISDA Championships with a third-place finish in the 50 yard butterfly (28.97). Sherman finshed second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:08.25), and third in the 50 yard backstroke (33.58). Junior Misha Kuyuzov (Swampscott, Mass.) took second in the 50 yard breaststroke (32.58), second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:11.57), and third in the 200 yard individual medley (2:17.96). Senior Niels Thomsen (Southington, Conn.) posted third-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (26.08) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:18.75). Freshman Rick Giordano (Agawam, Mass.) claimed fourth in the 50 yard backstroke (40.32) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:29.78), and fifth in the 50 yard freestyle (32.35). Freshman Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) was third in the 100 yard freestyle (1:20.56), and fifth in the 50 yard backstroke (48.08). The 200 yard medley relay team of Giordano, Thomsen, Sherman, and Luciani placed second (2:16.10), while the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Cirillo, Bergstrom, Grippo, and Kuyuzov also took second with a time of 1:39.78.

The Swim teams will return to the pool as the Blazers host their first event of the season when Colby-Sawyer visits the Maguire Center Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
