Swim Teams Set Seven School Records in Day One Action of NEISDA Championships

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – The Elms College men's and women's swim teams completed day one action at the 2012 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Friday at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center in White River Junction, Vt.

After day one action, the men's team is currently in seventh place out of 12 teams, while the women's squad sits in 12th place in the 22 team field. Day two of the NEISDA Championship will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 and conclude on Sunday, Feb. 19.

Preliminaries

In Friday's preliminaries, Elms set a pair of school records on both the men's side and the women's side and the men's 400-yard medley relay squad clocked a new school mark.

In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Keegan Goan (Westbrook, Maine) finished third and set a new school record with a time of 53.73, while senior Nicholas Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) tagged the wall in 11th place in a new school-best time of 2:09.87 in the 200-yard individual medley.

The team of Provost, senior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.), Goan and sophomore Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.) registered a new school record time of 3:50.64 in the 400-yard medley relay and finished fifth.

For the women, sophomore Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle with a new school record time of 5:22.33, while junior Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) touched the wall fifth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 31.83 to set a new school record.  

Finals

In the finals, Goan lowered his school record from the preliminaries in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.67 and finished in fourth place.

Provost added a 12th place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.34), while junior Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) finished 14th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.99) and Brune notched a 16th place mark in the 50-yard breaststroke (29.46).

Starke tabbed 11th place honors in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.92.  

On the women's side, DeGrazia lowered her school record from earlier in the day in the 500-yard freestyle and finished the event in sixth place with a time of 5:20.61.

Dudunake added a sixth place mark in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.22), while sophomore Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) swam to an 18th place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.34).

Dudunake and junior Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) notched 15th and 23rd place finishes respectively in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 26.25 and 26.88.
