Men’s and Women’s Swimming Compete at UMass-Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Elms College sophomore Keegan Goan (Westbrook, Maine) won three individual events for the men's team, while sophomore Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) won two events including a new school record in the 1000-yard freestyle and added a second place finish during Saturday's men's and women's swimming dual meet at UMass-Dartmouth.

The men's team recorded its first tie under head coach Bill Tyler, 108-108 to move to 1-2-1 on the season, while the women's suffered a 141-99 loss.

On the men's side Goan recorded three wins in the 100-yard butterfly (55.13), the 100-yard individual medley (58.68) and the 50-yard freestyle (23.21). Junior Jonathan Girard (West Springfield, Mass.) added a win in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:57.17), freshman Jeffrey Ludington (Killingworth, Conn.) recorded first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.85), sophomore Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.) notched a win in the 100-yard freestyle (53.07) and senior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.10) to help the Blazers secure their tie with UMass-Dartmouth.

Junior Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) added three second place finishes for Elms in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.33), the 100-yard freestyle (56.47) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.00), while senior Nicholas Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) finished second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:57.09) and third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:41.34.

Ludington finished second in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.13) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:04.75), while Brune was third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.97).

The 200-yard medley relay team of Provost, Brune, senior Michael Desmond (Nashua, N.H.) and Girard was second with a time of 1:59.43.

DeGrazia earned a pair of victories to help pace the women's squad including a time of 11:18.33 in the 1000-yard freestyle to set a new school record. She added a win in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.40) and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.35).

Sophomore Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) tabbed second place in the 400-yard individual medley but her mark of 5:14.85 established a new school record. Kirchner registered second place in the 100-yard individual medley (1:07.20) and third place in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.23).

Junior Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) was Elms' lone three-event winner, claiming top honors in the 50-yard freestyle (26.26), the 100-yard individual medley (1:05.93) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.69).

Junior Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) turned in two second place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.73) and the 100-yard freestyle (58.12), and clocked a time of 6:09.45 in the 500-yard freestyle to place third.

Junior Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) and Rebecca Yungk (New Britain, Conn.) each contributed a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle respectively. Furtek registered a time of 1:10.79 in the butterfly event, while Yungk swam to a time of 6:04.84 in the long distance freestyle race.

Elms' 200-yard medley relay team of junior Tricia Ruell (Chicopee, Mass.), senior Katie Roberts (Torrington, Conn.), Furtek and Yungk came in second with a time of 2:07.74.

The Blazers return to the pool in 2012 when they host Bridgewater State University on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Partyka Natatorium.
