Swimming Sweeps Past Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.)

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) clocked a new school record in the 50-meter freestyle for the women, and senior Nicholas Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) won three events to help pace the Blazers to a sweep of Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) in Saturday's men's and women's swimming dual meet at Partyka Natatorium.

The men's team (3-2-1 overall) posted a 101-61 victory, while the women's team improved to 5-4 on the season with a 115-86 victory. Mount Saint Mary's men's team moves to 4-4 overall, while the women's squad falls to 5-3 overall.

On the men's side, Provost glided to victory in the 200-meter freestyle (2:18.33), the 100-meter butterfly (1:10.85), and the 100-meter freestyle (5:03.32) while junior Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) won the 1500-meter freestyle (19:38.02), sophomore Keegan Goan (Westbrook, Maine) won the 200-meter individual medley (2:27.08) and senior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) won the 100-meter breaststroke (1:18.69).

The 200-meter medley relay team of sophomore Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.), Brune, Goan and junior Jonathan Girard (West Springfield, Mass.) won the event unopposed with a time of 2:08.58.

For the women, Dudunake finished second in the 50-meter freestyle, but her time of 29.31 set a new school mark. She added a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:20.69), while sophomore Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) won the 800-meter freestyle (10:03.25), the 200-meter freestyle (2:18.33) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:15.07).

Sophomore Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:42.97 while junior Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) touched the wall first in the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 1:03.75.

The team of junior Tricia Ruell (Chicopee, Mass.), senior Katie Roberts (Torrington, Conn.), junior Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) and Bird won the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:20.11.

The women's team is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 6:00 p.m. when it hosts Western New England University. Both teams then travel to the University of New England on Jan. 21.
