Women’s Swimming Splits with Simmons College and Gordon College, Men’s Swimming Tops Gordon
BOSTON, Mass. – Elms College sophomore Keegan Goan (Westbrook, Maine) placed first in the men's 50-yard butterfly with a new school record, while sophomore Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) set a new school record in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle in Saturday's men's and women's swim meet hosted by Simmons College.
The men's team posted a 138-89 victory over Gordon College, while the women's team secured an 87-34 over the Fighting Scots. Simmons edged the Blazers, 69-58 on the women's side as the meet came down to the final relay. Simmons added a 96-30 victory over Gordon on the women's side.
On the men's side, Goan won the 50-yard backstroke (27.37), the 50-yard freestyle (23.35) and the 50-yard butterfly with a new school record of 24.67.
Junior Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) added a trio of wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:20.02), the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.96), and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.50.
Senior Nicholas Provost (Three Rivers, Mass.) won the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.49) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.12) while freshman Jeffrey Ludington (Killingworth, Conn.) secured wins in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke with respective times of 51.51 and 1:04.55.
Senior Garrett Brune (Lakeville, Mass.) notched a first place time of 31.15 in the 50-yard breaststroke, while junior Jonathan Girard (West Springfield, Mass.) chipped in two second place finishes and a third place finish. Senior Michael Desmond (Nashua, N.H.) touched the wall third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:36.42).
The 200-yard medley relay team of Ludington, Brune, Goan and Gehring registered a time of 1:45.94 – one second off the record - and finished first.
For the women, DeGrazia won three races including a school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:33.95), the 50-yard backstroke (31.03), and the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.22).
Sophomore Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) tabbed a pair of first place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.71) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:28.67) while securing second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.69). Junior Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) captured a first place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.78) and the team of DeGrazia, Dudunake, Kirchner and junior Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) powered to a top finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:59.49.
Senior Katie Roberts (Torrington, Conn.) contributed two second place finishes, while Bird added a second of her own.
Both the men's and women's swim teams return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12 when they host St. Joseph's College (Maine) at 1:00 p.m. at Partyka Natatorium in the Blazers' 2011-12 home opener.
