Tyler, Soutra Compete at Massachusetts Senior Games

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Elms College men’s and women’s swimming head coach Bill Tyler and assistant coach Corey Soutra recently competed in the Massachusetts Senior Games.

Formed in 1991, the Massachusetts Senior Games kindled the Olympic spirit and ignited the flame for thousands of older adults across Massachusetts. The Senior Games provides participants the opportunity to compete in a variety of activities throughout the year.

Each year the number of athletes, events, volunteers and supporters grows. Today, more than 1,000 athletes grouped in five year age categories may enter a spectrum of 23 summer events, seven winter events, and an Olympic Fitness Walk. They may also attend educational programs and the Health/Sports Expo during the summer games, and participate in a series of clinics and workshops held all over the state throughout the year.

Coach Tyler earned first place finishes and qualified for next summer’s national Senior Games in Ohio in all five of his races during this season’s summer games touching the wall first in the 50-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events and the 50-meter and 100-meter butterfly events.

Coach Soutra won the 200-meter backstroke, was second in the 200-meter, 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke and claimed second in the 50-meter backstroke, while also notching third place in the 100-meter backstroke. Coach Soutra’s finishes also allowed her to qualify for next year’s national competition.
