Three Second Half Scores Pace Men’s Soccer Past Southern Vermont College, 4-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior forward Joseph Coleman (Easthampton, Mass.) found senior forward Ziggy Jonathan (Springfield, Mass.) twice for goals in the second half to help lift the Blazers to a 4-0 victory over Southern Vermont College in Tuesday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the win, Elms improves to 7-7-0 on the season, 3-1-0 in conference play. Southern Vermont moves to 3-10-1 overall, 1-3-1 in NECC action.

Elms struck for its first goal late in the first half when senior forward Adam O'Grady's (Somers, Conn.) shot glanced off a defender straight to sophomore midfielder Connor O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) who blasted the ball into the left corner of the net to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead at the 37:57 mark.

Elms increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 48th minute of action when Coleman delivered the first of his two assists to Jonathan who found the back of the net with his sixth goal of the season.

The duo connected again at the 61:10 mark to extend the lead to 3-0, before sophomore midfielder Richard Vanasse (Somers, Conn.) capped the scoring in the 79th minute when Southern Vermont turned the ball over in its defensive third and Vanasse capitalized with a bullet inside the near post to set the score at 4-0.

Elms' defensive line of juniors Brendan Reynolds (Springfield, Mass.) and Anthony Nitri (Feeding Hills, Mass.), sophomore Joe Pellegrini (Somers, Conn.) and freshman Scott Labrie (Southampton, Mass.) kept the Mountaineers off the board in front of sophomore goalkeeper Nick Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) who stopped all four shots on goal that he faced to preserve the shutout.

Erik Argueta (Pico Rivera, Calif.) fired two shots on target while Derek Snow (Centerville, Mass.) and Matthew Snow (Centerville, Mass.) each had an offering on goal in the losing effort.

Goalkeeper Chris Dunham (Valley Falls, N.Y.) made 10 saves between the pipes for the Mountaineers.

Elms returns to NECC action on Saturday, October 19 at Lesley University at 6:00 p.m.
