Men’s Soccer Falls to Worcester State University, 1-0 in Overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – Elms College sophomore defender Connor O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) fired a shot in the 94th minute of play, but Worcester State University goalkeeper Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.) made his eighth save of the afternoon and Derek Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) scored on a loose ball at the top of the box two minutes later to give the Lancers a hard-fought, 1-0 victory in Tuesday evening's non-conference men's soccer game.

With the loss, Elms moves to 4-5-0 on the season, while Worcester State improves to 4-2-3 overall.

In an evenly matched contest, Worcester State edged the Blazers in total shots, 18-16, but Elms held an 8-2 lead in shots on goal with four of those coming off the foot of senior forward Adam O'Grady (Somers, Conn.).

Zucco was perfect between the pipes for Worcester State using eight saves to preserve the shutout victory.

Zucco was tested in the 31st minute when Adam O'Grady was awarded a penalty kick and denied the striker keeping the game even at 0-0.

The Lancers had a chance to break the scoreless tie at 57:41 mark when Derek Kareta (Ludlow, Mass.) took a shot but Elms' sophomore net-minder Christian Kostka (Oxford, Conn.) was equal to the task notching his lone save of the game.

Kareta was involved on the final play of the game which came six minutes into extra time as he assisted on Alves' game-winning score.

Elms returns to non-league play on Thursday, October 3 at WPI in a makeup game from September 12. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
