WPI Outlasts Men’s Soccer, 2-1

WORCSTER, Mass. – Elms College senior forward Ziggy Jonathan (Springfield, Mass.) headed a ball into the net on a corner kick service from junior forward Joseph Coleman (Easthampton, Mass.) but WPI's Zach Harmony (Dayton, Ohio) broke a 1-1 deadlock in the 64th minute to help lift the Engineers to a 2-1 victory over the Blazers in Thursday evening's non-conference men's soccer game in Worcester, Mass.

With the loss, Elms moves to 4-6-0 overall, while WPI improves to 7-2-1.

Harmony headed home a throw-in by sophomore Chris Murray (Canton, Mass.) for what proved to be the game-winning marker at 63:43. WPI outshot Elms 14-3 in the second half and took five of the eight corner kicks in the frame.

WPI broke the scoreless tie just 3:58 into the game when Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.) capitalized on a penalty kick after hitting the post on his first shot at the 1:30 mark to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.

Neither net-minder was tested again until the 30th minute when WPI's  Jeff Wong (Millington, N.J.) scooped up a shot by Coleman. Coleman then doled out a corner kick to Jonathan who headed in the equalizer in the 31st minute.

Elms' sophomore goalkeeper Nick Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) made his lone stop of the half in the 34th minute as Ditton Kawalya (Kanbala, Uganda) took a shot from the left side shortly after he entered the game.

Both Wong and Pennant stopped four shots apiece while Coleman registered a team save for the Blazers in the 79th minute.

Elms is back in action on Sunday, October 6 when it hosts Springfield College in non-league play at 4:00 p.m.
