CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore goalkeeper Nick Pennant (Kingston, Jamaica) made six saves, Springfield College used two second half goals highlighted by a pair of assists from Danny Amato (Newington, Conn.) to help lift the Pride to a 3-0 victory over the Blazers in Sunday afternoon's non-conference men's soccer game at Leary Field.
With the loss, Elms moves to 4-7-0 on the season while Springfield improves to 9-2-0 overall.
After playing 36 minutes of scoreless soccer that saw Elms control much of the place of play, including a pair well placed shots by sophomore forward Lorenzo Rolocut (Somers, Conn.) and one from senior forward Adam O'Grady (Somers, Conn.), Springfield broke through when Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) fired a shot that found its way into the net to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Amato delivered a long pass from the right wing to set up the scoring chance.
Leading 1-0 at intermission, Springfield added to its tally eight minutes into the second half when Amato and Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) executed a give-and-go following a short corner kick service and Malone deposited the ball into the back of the net to set the score at 2-0.
The Pride struck again with a set piece at the 78:28 mark on when Tyler Allen (Southbridge, Mass.) lifted his corner kick to Drew Vanasse (Concord, Mass.) who finished with Springfield's third and final tally.
Pennant made five of his six saves in the second half in the losing effort, while his counterpart Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) made six saves including four in the first period to keep a clean sheet for the Pride.
Elms returns to non-league action on Wednesday, October 9 at Suffolk University at 8:30 p.m.
