PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Elms College field hockey team was defeated by host Johnson & Wales University, 6-0, in non-conference play at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex Wednesday night. The Blazers move to 0-4 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 1-2 in their home opener.

After 20 minutes of scoreless play, Johnson and Wales cracked the scoreboard as freshman Madeline Larson (Catonsville, Md.) found sophomore Katarina Brunette (Cohoes, N.Y.) open in front of the net, where she put home the pass to make it a 1-0 game. Three minutes later, Brunette struck again, scoring off a corner set up by sophomore Shaina Thompson (Delmar, Del.) and junior Amy Martin (Enfield, Conn.). With 5:45 remaining in the first half, JWU freshman Adriana Scala (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) put back a rebound off a shot to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead heading into the intermission.

In the 53rd minute of play, Scala hovered around the net, found another loose ball, and tucked a shot past Elms senior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) to make it a 4-0 game. Martin netted her first goal of the season less than two minutes later, followed by a tally from sophomore Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) in the 63rd minute, to send Johnson & Wales to the 6-0 win.

The Wildcats controlled the shot column over the Blazers, 35-9. Alvino stopped a game-high 15 shots for Elms, and freshman Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) made three saves in relief. Johnson & Wales sophomore Shannon Yoder (Boyertown, Pa.) recorded six saves in the win.

The Blazers will look to move into the win column with a road trip to Anna Maria on Tuesday, September 15th. Face-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Wildcats host Lasell College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
