CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey team fell to visiting Westfield State, 7-0, in their 2015 season opener at Leary Field. The Blazers move to 0-1 on the season, while Westfield State improved to 1-0.

After eight minutes of scoreless play, the Owls cracked the scoreboard as junior forward Holly Brouillette (Burlington, Mass.) knocked in a feed from sophomore forward Megan Evans (Enfield, Conn.) in front of the Blazers cage to stake Westfield State to a 1-0 lead. The Blazers held the Owls off the scoreboard for nearly the remainder of the first frame until Brouillette returned the favor by finding Evans in front of the goal, where she knocked a shot past Elms freshman goalkeeper Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.), putting Westfield up 2-0 with less than a minute to play in the half. The Owls took a 2-0 lead into the half

Westfield State pressured the Blazers early in the second half with Brouillette registering an unassisted tally in the 39th minute, followed by another stirke off a pass from senior midfielder Allison Lucenta (Natick, Mass.) less than two minutes later, extending the Westfield State lead to 4-0 with 28:58 to play. The Owls put the game away in the 49th minute as Owls sophomore midfielder Marci Macsata (Enfield, Conn.) recorded a pair of goals in a four-minute window, giving the Owls a 6-0 lead. Westfield State delivered their final strike with 2:25 to play as freshman Brittany Bowes (Leicester, Mass.) scored off a pass from junior midfielder Lauren Harrington (Norwood, Mass.), sending the Owls to the 7-0 victory.

The Owls outshot the Blazers, 32-6, during the contest. Lapponese stopped a game-high 20 shots for the Blazers, while Westfield State junior Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass.) made two stops and junior Alanah Melanson (Chelmsford, Mass.) stopped one shot in relief.

The Blazers will return to action on Friday, September 5th with a road trip to Western Connecticut State. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
