Women’s Volleyball Fends Off MCLA to Post 3-1 Win

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore outside hitter JC Pickett (Chicopee, Mass.) smashed a team-best 14 kills and sophomore libero Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) led the team with 25 digs to help pace the Blazers to a 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22) victory over MCLA in Thursday evening's non-conference women's volleyball match at Picknelly Arena.

With the win, Elms improves to 2-14 overall, while MCLA falls to 4-13 on the season.

Elms built a 2-0 lead in the match before MCLA clawed back in the third frame highlighted by a three-kill effort from Julia Christian (Cohoes, N.Y.) and an eight-assist output from Brittany Kish (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to help the Trailblazers secure a 25-18 win in the set and prevent the sweep.

In the fourth stanza, Elms built a 20-17 lead before MCLA's Angelica Perfido (Whately, Mass.) downed one of her 11 kills to pull the Trailblazers to within two at 20-18. The Blazers then scored three of the next four points sparked by a kill from Pickett to set the score at 23-19 before a Perfido kill stopped the rally and set the score at 23-20. Pickett then delivered her 13th kill of the contest to give Elms match point at 24-20, but an assisted block by Kish and Allie Chang (Northport, N.Y.) and a kill by Chang narrowed the Trailblazers' deficit to two at 24-22. From there, Pickett connected for her 14th kill of the contest and sealed the hard-fought win.

Pickett finished with 11 digs in addition to her 14 kills and assisted on three blocks. Senior outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) chipped in seven kills and 20 digs, freshman outside hitter Alexandra Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished with eight kills and 16 digs and freshman setter Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) dished out a team-high 16 assists and totaled 16 digs in the winning effort.

Christian and Perfido notched 15 digs each in the loss for MCLA and Christian led all hitters with a match-best 16 kills.

Kish led the Trailblazers' offensive efforts with 32 assists and 10 digs while libero Kelley Bryant (West Springfield, Mass.) was superb on defense, amassing 32 digs.

Elms returns to conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 10 when it travels to Mitchell College for a 6:00 p.m. match with the Mariners.
