Swimming Sets 10 School Records At NEISDA Championships

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming teams set 10 new school records during four days of action at the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships, held at the University of the Rhode Island.

On the first day of action, the 800 yard relay team of seniors Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.), Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.), junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) set the first of many school records on the weekend, posting a time of 7:18.01, besting the previous record of 7:31.14.

On Day 2 of the Championships, Cirillo placed fourth in the 500 yard freestyle (4:53.14), while Bergstrom took eighth in the 50 yard freestyle. In the 200 yard backstroke, both Burgos (2:02.33) and Grippo (2:03.44) broke the previous record held by James Grippo.

During the third day of the meet, Cirillo and Burgos both broke the school record in the 1000 yard freestyle with times of 10:14.08 and 10:16.73, respectively, besting one of the longest-standing records in the program held by Chris Papsin (10:17.13). Freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) set a new school mark in the 400 yard IM, shaving 10 seconds off her personal best time, clocking in at 5:12.91, to break the record set by Ashley Kirchner at 5:14.85. Grippo lowered both of his own school record in the 100 yard backstroke (56.59), while Cirillo posted new program mark in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.70, finishing third overall in the event.

On the final day of action, Grippo bested his own record in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 26.19, and Bergstrom set a new record in the 100 yard IM (56.14), knocking Keegan Goan out of the record-holder slot. Burgos finished fourth overall in the 1650 yard freestyle with a new record time of 16:58.70. The team of Cirillo, Burgos, Bergstrom and Grippo posted a new school record in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:20.19.
