Norwich Holds Off Swimming

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College swim squads were defeated by visiting Norwich University in a dual meet at Partyka Natatorium Saturday afternoon. The Blazers men's squad fell, 164-95, while the women's team lost, 167-95, to the Cadets.

On the men's side, senior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) registered a trio of first-place finishes, winning the 100 meter freestyle (57.73), the 200 meter freestyle (2:06.07), and the 400 meter freestyle (4:39.59). Classmate Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) won the 800 meter freestyle (9:15.91), while junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) took first in the 50 meter freestyle (25.80). Burgos and Bergstrom each added a second and third-place finish on the day. Sophomore Michael Grippo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) placed second in the 100 meter freestyle (57.85), and the 50 meter backstroke (30.64). Junior DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) grabbed third in the 200 meter backstroke (2:30.11), while freshman Josh Guntly (Chicopee, Mass.) took fourth in the 100 meter butterfly (1:21.44). Junior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) finished fifth in the 50 meter butterfly (33.62) and the 200 meter freestyle (2:36.42), freshman Paul Ferraro (Walpole, Mass.) touched fifth in the 50 meter breaststroke (39.72) and the 800 meter freestyle (11:17.52), and sophomore Joseph Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) finished fifth in the 400 meter freestyle (6:35.85). In the 200 meter medley relay, the squad of Grippo, Burgos, Bergstrom and Cirillo clocked a time of 1:58.42 to finish in first place.

For the women's team, freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) recorded a trio of first-place finishes in the 50 meter butterfly (35.01), the 100 meter backstroke (1:19.11) and the 200 meter freestyle (2:27.64). Junior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) won the 400 meter freestyle (5:28.33), while adding a pair of second-place finishes. Freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) grabbed second-place in the 100 meter backstroke (1:20.07) with a pair of third-place finishes, while sophomore Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) nabbed second in the 50 meter backstroke (42.92). Senior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) placed third in the 400 meter freestyle (5:49.11) and the 800 meter freestyle (11:33.21), and sophomore Desiree Milar (Springfield, Mass.) claimed third in the 50 meter freestyle (32.46) and the 50 meter breaststroke (41.61). Sophomore Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) took third in the 50 meter backstroke (42.74), freshman Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) grabbed third in the 200 meter freestyle (2:36.66), and senior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) finished fourth in the 800 meter freestyle (12:15.73). In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of Obando, Milar, Scianna, and Gordon placed second with a time of 2:24.15. 

The Blazers will return to action with a road trip to SUNY-Cobleskill Tuesday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. meet. Norwich hosts UMass-Dartmouth January 28th at 2:00 p.m.
