Men's Swimming Victorious At St. Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine – The Elms College swimming team raced against host Saint Joseph's (ME) in a dual meet at Harold Alfond Center Saturday afternoon. The men's squad registered a 116-32 win, while the women's team fell to the Monks, 93-150.

On the men's side, the Blazers posted seven first-place finishes, led by junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Michael Grippo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) with a pair of firsts each. Bergstrom won the 50 yard breaststroke (31.63) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.08), while Grippo touched first in the 50 yard backstroke (26.68) and 50 yard freestyle (24.64). Senior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville) came in first in the 100 yard freestyle (52.21), classmate Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) was first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:58.03), and freshman Paul Ferraro (Walpole, Mass.) claimed first in the 1000 yard freestyle (13:15.41). Junior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) took second in the 50 yard freestyle (29.07) and the 200 yard freestyle (2:24.96), while freshman Joshua Guntly (Chicopee, Mass.) grabbed a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke (31.87) and the 100 backstroke (1:10.39). Sophomore Patrick Gay (East Hartford, Conn.) took second in the 100 yard freestyle (1:07.68), and sophomore Joseph Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) placed third in the 100 yard freestyle (1:14.72) and the 200 yard freestyle (2:30.71).

For the women, the Blazers notched four first-place finishes, paced by sophomore Desi Milar (Springfield, Mass.), who claimed first in the 100 yard freestyle (1:05.77) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:20.92). Junior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) was first in the 50 yard freestyle (28.44) and second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:22.95), while freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) finished first in the 100 yard individual medley (1:13.73) and second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:12.05). Senior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) nabbed a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 yard butterfly (38.52) and the 1000 yard freestyle (14:13.39). Senior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) took second in the 500 yard freestyle, and freshman Julieanne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) finished third in the 100 yard freestyle (1:08.93) and the 500 yard freestyle (7:16.17). Sophomore Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) placed fourth in the 50 yard butterfly (40.99) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:20.13), and classmate Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) was fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (1:15.01).

The Blazers will return to the pool when they host their home opening meet against Colby-Sawyer at Partyka Natatorium Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
