Men's Swimming Defeats UNE, Women's Team Fall To Nor'Easters

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming team split with University of New England in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Partyka Natatorium. The men's team won 126-79, while the women's squad was defeated, 142-88.

The Blazers honored their four departing seniors in Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.), Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.), Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.), and Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.)

For the men's squad, Burgos set a new Elms record and pool record in the 1500 meter freestyle with a time of 17:31.09, along with first in the 50 meter breaststroke (34.47), and first in the 200 meter backstroke (2:19.94). Cirillo captured a first place finish in the 200 meter free (2:09.07), and first in the 400 meter free (4:31.69). Sophomore Michael Grippo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came in first in the 50 meter backstroke (30.27), first in the 100 meter free (57.82), and second in the 50 meter free (27.61). Junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) notched a first place finish in the 50 meter free (26.58), first in the 100 breast (1:19.40). Junior DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) came in first in the 100 meter butterfly (1:13.32). Freshman Paul Ferraro (Walpole, Mass.) came in second in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:28.49). Junior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) was third in the 200 meter free (2:34.05). In the 200 meter relay the team of freshman Josh Guntly (Chicopee, Mass.), Ferraro, Sherman, and Luciani earned a second-place finish. Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) ranked first in the 400 meter free with a time of 4:31.69 earning a new school record. The 800 meter relay squad also captured a school and pool record with a time of 8:31.60. The group consisted of Grippo, Bergstrom, Burgos, and Cirillo.  

O' Connell came in first in the 1500 meter free (22:34.70), second in the 400 meter free (5:46.00). Freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) came in first in the 50 meter butterfly (37:91). Freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) logged first in the women 400 meter IM (5:58:88) and second in the 100 free (1:07.38). Junior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) came in second in the women 50 meter free (31:42). Carterud was second in the 400 IM (6:54.14), sophomore Desiree Milar (Springfield, Mass.) claimed second in the 50 Fly (40.28). The team of Scianna, Milar, Obando, and Carrier earned a third place finish in the IM relay.
