Men's Swimming Races Past Cobleskill, Women's Team Ties Fighting Tigers

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming team found success during a road trip meet at SUNY-Cobleskill Tuesday afternoon at Bouck Hall Natatorium. The men's team raced to a 148-117 victory, while the women's squad tied the Fighting Tigers at 122-122.

For the men's side, senior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) registered a trio of first-place finishes, touching first in the 100 yard freestyle (52.67), the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.47), and the 500 yard freestyle (5:26.53). Junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) also claimed three first-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (23.77), the 50 yard butterfly (26.08), and the 100 yard IM (59.24). Senior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) placed first in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:29.22) and the 1000 yard freestyle (10:28.42), while sophomore Michael Grippo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came in first in the 50 yard backstroke (28.05) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:09.00). Junior D.J. Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.07) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:18.56). Freshman Paul Ferraro (Walpole, Mass.) finished third in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:49.15) and the 1000 yard freestyle (13:15.48), while junior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) came in third in the 200 yard freestyle (2:21.95). Sophomore Joseph Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) placed third in the 500 yard freestyle (7:27.53), while freshman Paul Guntly (Chicopee, Mass.) recorded two fourth-place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke (33.24) and the 100 yard butterfly (1:13.40). In the 200 yard medley relay, the team of Grippo, Burgos, Bergstrom, and Cirillo won the event with a time of 1:55.90.

On the women's side, freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) tallied a pair of first-place finishes in the 400 yard IM (5:25.08) and the 500 yard freestyle (6:00.04), along with a second-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (1:10.42). Senior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.), junior Aislin Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) and freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) each registered a first-place finish with two second-place finishes. O'Connell came in first in the 1000 yard freestyle (13:01.55), Carrier touched first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:18.13), and Obando won the 200 yard backstroke (2:39.29). Sophomore Desiree Milar (Springfield, Mass.) grabbed a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 yard breaststroke (38.10) and the 200 yard breaststroke (3:03.66), while senior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) came in second in the 1000 yard freestyle (13:57.00). Freshman Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) placed third in the 50 yard freestyle (30.02), sophomore Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) touched fourth in the 50 yard backstroke (39.25), and sophomore Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) came in fourth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:43.28). In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Gordon, Carrier, Milar, and Scianna won the event with a time of 1:56.22.

The Blazers will be back in the pool with a road trip to Regis College for a meet Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
