Swimming Falls To UMass-Dartmouth

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming squads fell to visiting UMass-Dartmouth in a dual meet at Partyka Natatorium Saturday afternoon. The men's team was downed 164-96, by the Corsairs, while the women's team was defeated 193-63.

For the men's team, sophomore Michael Grippo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) posted a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 meter backstroke, breaking his own school record with a time of 29.61, and the 100 meter backstroke (1:05.15). Junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) registered victories in the 50 meter freestyle (26.15) and the 100 meter IM (1:08.94), along with a second-place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:20.79). Senior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) won the 800 meter freestyle (9:35.06), and took second in the 50 meter butterfly (29.63) and the 100 meter freestyle (57.80). Senior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) clocked a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 meter breaststroke (34.87) and the 200 meter freestyle (2:10.36). The team of Grippo, Burgos, Bergstrom and Cirillo placed first in the 200 meter medley relay with a time of 1:58.34.

On the women's side, freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) notched two second-place finishes in the 50 meter backstroke (36.24), a qualifying time for New England Championships, and the 100 meter backstroke (1:20.66). Sophomore Desiree Milar (Springfield, Mass.) took second in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:31.41), while classmate Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) claimed second in the 100 meter freestyle (1:09.17), along with third-place finishes in the 100 meter butterfly (1:19.31) and the 100 meter IM (1:20.71). Junior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) posted a trio of third-place finishes in the 50 meter freestyle (31.51), the 100 meter freestyle (1:12.52), and the 400 meter freestyle (5:38.48). Senior Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) placed third in the 800 meter freestyle (11:59.09), and freshman Julianner Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) came in third in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:46.55.

The Blazers will return to the pool at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships at Simmons College in Boston on December 3-4.
