Swimming Slips At Regis

WESTON, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swimming team fell to host Regis College in a dual meet at the Regis Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon. The men's team was downed by the Pride, 139-97, while the women's squad was defeated, 163-85.

For the men's squad, senior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.) claimed first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:16.77), along with second-place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke (30.41) and the 200 yard freestyle (1:54.09). Sophomore Michael Grippo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) grabbed first in the 50 yard backstroke (28.27) and second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.99), while junior DJ Sherman (Winstead, Conn.) finished first in the 200 yard IM (2:22.35). Senior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) registered a trio of second-place finishes in the 50 yard breaststroke (31.90), the 200 yard breaststroke (2:29.59) and the 1650 yard freestyle (18:08.67), and junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) nabbed second in the 50 yard butterfly (26.09) and the 100 yard freestyle (52.16). Freshman Paul Ferraro (Walpole, Mass.) took fourth in the 50 yard breaststroke (36.97) and the 500 yard freestyle (6:13.49), while classmate Joshua Guntly (Chicopee, Mass.) placed fourth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:10.95) and the 100 yard butterfly (1:12.32). Sophomore Joseph Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) finished fourth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:40.34), and junior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) clocked a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 50 yard butterfly (31.64) and the 100 yard freestyle. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Bergstrom, Burgos, Grippo and Cirillo won the even with a time of 1:35.29.

On the women's side, junior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) touched first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:23.96), while adding second-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (28.11) and the 200 yard freestyle (2:18.31). Freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) finished first in the 100 yard IM (1:15.26) and second in the 50 yard backstroke (33.82). Senior Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) placed second in the 100 yard IM (1:26.60) and the 1650 yard freestyle (23:42.87), and classmate Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) took second in the 100 yard IM (1:23.90). Freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) logged a trio of third-place finishes in the 100 yard freestyle (1:01.59), the 100 yard butterfly (1:11.56) and the 500 yard freestyle (6:05.21). Freshman Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) placed third in the 50 yard breaststroke (41.17), sophomore Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) finished fourth in three event including the 200 yard backstroke (2:59.65), and sophomore Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) took fifth in two events. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Gordon, Rotberg, Carrier and Scianna won the event with a time of 1:59.12.

The Blazers will return to the pool when they host the University of New England Saturday at Noon. Saturday's meet will be Senior Day for the Elms Swimming team.
