WORCESTER, MA – Elms College freshman goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, MA) collected seven saves, but WPI scored three first half goals to lift the Engineers to a 4-0 victory over the Blazers in Wednesday evening’s non-conference men’s soccer game at Alumni Field.

With the loss, Elms falls to 2-7 on the season, while WPI ups its record to 8-2 overall.

WPI found its offensive stride early when Tommy Zajac (Merrimack, NH) scored on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute of play to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. Zajac then delivered a free kick into the six-yard box that was headed in by Thomas Cucinotta (Easton, MA), extending the lead to 2-0 at the 27:25 mark.

Zajac then led a breakaway that resulted in a scoring strike by Jason Hopkins (Mendon, MA) that pushed the Engineers’ lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute of the match.

From there, Matthew Gonsalves (Swansea, MA) put the ball in the back of the net following a pass from Mike Ford (Whitman, MA) to cap the scoring and lift the advantage to 4-0.

WPI out-shot the Blazers 18-2 for the game, with 11 of those shots coming in the first period.

Elms freshman forward Tavish Leland (Bridgton, ME) and junior forward Sam Senecal (Chicopee, MA) tallied the Blazers’ only shots on the day.

Elms returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Blazers travel to Waterville, ME to take on Daniel Webster at 1:00 p.m.
