Men’s Soccer Falls At WPI, 4-0

WORCESTER, MA – Elms College freshman
goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, MA) collected
seven saves, but WPI scored three first half goals to lift the
Engineers to a 4-0 victory over the Blazers in Wednesday
evening’s non-conference men’s soccer game at Alumni
Field.
With the loss, Elms falls to 2-7 on the season, while WPI ups its
record to 8-2 overall.
WPI found its offensive stride early when Tommy Zajac
(Merrimack, NH) scored on a penalty kick in the 23rd
minute of play to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. Zajac then
delivered a free kick into the six-yard box that was headed in by
Thomas Cucinotta (Easton, MA), extending the lead
to 2-0 at the 27:25 mark.
Zajac then led a breakaway that resulted in a scoring strike by
Jason Hopkins (Mendon, MA) that pushed the
Engineers’ lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute of the match.
From there, Matthew Gonsalves (Swansea, MA) put
the ball in the back of the net following a pass from Mike Ford
(Whitman, MA) to cap the scoring and lift the advantage to 4-0.
WPI out-shot the Blazers 18-2 for the game, with 11 of those shots
coming in the first period.
Elms freshman forward Tavish Leland (Bridgton, ME)
and junior forward Sam Senecal (Chicopee, MA)
tallied the Blazers’ only shots on the day.
Elms returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on
Saturday, Oct. 3. The Blazers travel to Waterville, ME to take on
Daniel Webster at 1:00 p.m.
