CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Sixth-seeded Elms College senior goalkeeper Nick Pellegrini (Ludlow, MA) recorded seven saves, but No. 3 Newbury College used five goals from five different players to complete a 5-1 victory over the Blazers in Wednesday evening’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship tournament quarterfinal men’s soccer contest at Pine Manor College.

With the loss, Elms concludes its 2009 season with 5-14 overall record. Newbury moves to 6-13 on the season and will play No. 2 Lesley in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6.

After playing to a scoreless tie for much of the first period, Newbury broke the deadlock in the 38th minute of play when freshman Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, MA) found the back of the net off a rebound from Newbury junior Joseph Lawer (Worcester, MA). Five minutes later they would add to the lead when Moosavizadeh found junior Kevin Gregory (Blacksburg, VA) in front of the net for the second goal of the contest.

The Nighthawks extended their lead to 3-0 four minutes into the second stanza when Lawer punched in a goal off a feed from Andy Osei (Worcester, MA). Hector Adudoj (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) then rifled a goal past Pellegrini two minutes later to up the lead to 4-0, before Hayato Iwahori (Tokyo, Japan) hit Anthony Fannoh III (Worcester, MA) with a pass that he drilled into the net in the 72nd minute to give Newbury a 5-0 lead.

Elms sophomore forward Tom Ferruolo (Arlington, VT) got the Blazers on the board when he scored off a feed from sophomore forward Adam Schnopp (Pittsfield, MA) at the 77:09 mark, making the score 5-1.

Nighthawks’ goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, MA) finished with eight saves in the winning effort.

Elms senior Ben Masse (Chicopee, MA), junior Chris Silva (Chicopee, MA) and freshman Tavish Leland (Bridgton, ME) each blasted three shots for the Blazers in the loss.
