NEW LONDON, Conn. – Greg Metelus poured in 27 points but the Elms College men's basketball team fell at Mitchell on Wednesday night, 86-69, in New England Collegiate conference play.
Metelus (Palm Beach, Fla) hit 12-of-22 shots for the Blazers (1-18, 1-8 NECC). D.J. Edelen (Prince George, Va.) and Michal Ohradka (Feeding Hills, Mass.) chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Elms. Edelen also pulled down a team-high nine boards while Ohradka handed out four assists.
Mitchell's Hasani Williams (Miramar, Fla.) scored 27 points of his own, going 9-for-13 and adding eight rebounds. Steffen Brunson (West Haven, Conn.) chipped in 18 points while Brayvon Young (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) added 17, and Domenico Santiago (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Mitchell scored on its first three possessions of the game and held the lead throughout. The Mariners led as many as 15 in the first half, taking a 25-10 lead on a fast-break lay-up by Colizel Lewis (Stockton, Calif.) with 11:40 remaining before Elms scored went on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to just 25-21 on a lay-up by Tyler Sterling (Laurel, Md.) with 5:42 left in the half.
Mitchell, however, regained control of the game with a 3-pointer by Brunson, one of four for the junior forward in the opening half. Matt Finke (Wolcott, Conn.) and Young also drilled threes in the final four minutes of the period as the Mariners pushed the lead to 48-32 by intermission.
Elms trailed by double digits for the majority of the second half. The Blazers got as close as nine when Edelen buried a three to make it 57-48 with 14:26 remaining, but the Mariners answered on the next possession with a jumper by Lewis.
Mitchell shot 51 percent for the game, got to the free throw line 29 times where the Mariners outscored the Blazers 21-8. Elms shot 42 percent as a team and committed 15 turnovers.
The Blazers will return home to host Newbury College on Feb. 3 at 3:00 p.m.
