UMass-Dartmouth Downs Men's Basketball

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Six Corsairs found themselves in double-digits as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team withstood a late rally by Elms College to take the opening round of the Hampton Inn Tournament 92-75 at the Tripp Athletic Center on Friday.

How it Happened

The Corsairs opened the game with the offense flowing as it got out to a 34-17 run that lasted the first 15 minutes of play. Before the end of the half, the hosts controlled a 46-28 lead to head into intermission.

In the opening 10 minutes of the second half, the Blazers battled back as Michal Ohradka (Feeding Hills, Mass.) sparked a 27-17 scoring drive with a lay in to pull the visitors within two points of equalizing the score.

UMass Dartmouth, with the momentum starting to slip, kicked up the tempo for the remaining 10 minutes of the game, starting when junior Arinze Obiora (Lagos, Nigeria) knocked down a lay-up in traffic. The Corsairs didn't let up in the remaining minutes of the game as 12 unanswered points, including seven by Obiora boiled into a 33-17 scoring drive, bringing the scoreboard to the 92-75 final.

Inside the Numbers

•          UMass Dartmouth shot 33-of-70 from the field and 10-of-22 from beyond the arc while Elms College finished 26-of-62 and 9-of-26 in those same categories.

•          Elms' sophomore DeAngelo Cousar (Bowie, Md.) logged a game-high 30 points on 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. Corsairs' senior Joshua Imadiyi (Lynn, Mass.) picked up a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds while five others poured in 10 or more points.

•          Freshman Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) ran a clean offense for UMass Dartmouth, totaling a game-high six assists to go along with 16 points.

•          UMass controlled a 42-35 advantage on the glass to go along with 25 forced turnovers and 42 points created from turnovers.

•          Both teams were respectable from the charity stripe, notching free throw percentages of over 75%.

UMass Dartmouth will play in the championship round of the Hampton Inn Tournament tomorrow at 7:00 P.M. when it takes on Castleton University. Elms College will go up against Curry College in the consolation round at 5:00 P.M.
