Anna Maria College Downs Women’s Lacrosse, 13-6

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman goalkeeper Julie Hurley (Palmer, Mass.) made a collegiate career-high 27 saves but four scores from Crystal Torres (Southbridge, Mass.) and three from Katie Schebel (Ludlow, Mass.) helped pace Anna Maria College to a 13-6 victory over the Blazers in Wednesday evening's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms falls to 3-12 on the season while Anna Maria closes out its season 3-14 overall.

Torres broke the scoreless tie 6:10 into the contest and added her second goal just 32 seconds later to give Anna Maria an early 2-0 lead.

Elms' senior attacker Melissa Meon (South Hadley, Mass.) scored at the 16:25 mark and a goal by junior attacker Chelsey Grabowski (South Hadley, Mass.) one minute later evened the contest at 2-2.

Torres netted her third goal of the game with 7:49 to play in the opening period that started a stretch of four consecutive goals by the AMCATS. Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.), Schebel and Kristina Breton (Worcester, Mass.) each scored during the stretch to give Anna Maria a 6-2 lead.

Grabowski found Meon with a beautiful pass for her second goal of the game to cut the Blazers' deficit to three with 38 seconds left but Mackenzie Coakley (Millbury, Mass.) struck for the AMCATS with just one second on the clock to give Anna Maria a 7-3 cushion at intermission.

Torres notched her fourth goal 39 seconds into the second half and Schebel added her second 8:02 later to up the AMCATS advantage to 9-3.

Meon scored for the second time on a feed from Grabowski with 11:56 to play and freshman midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) shoveled in a score on a pass from behind the net by sophomore attacker Lauren Kalbach (West Harwich, Mass.) to pull Elms to within four at 9-5 with 9:55 to play in the game.

Schebel scored her final goal 23 seconds later before Elms' junior attacker Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.) fired in a goal to keep the gap at four (10-6) with 8:05 on the clock.

From there, a score by Hevy at the 7:21 mark and a goal each by Heidi Toce (Ashland, Mass.) and Sarah Moore (Holden, Mass.) with less than one minute to play sealed the victory for Anna Maria.

Hevy and Toce finished with six groundballs each, while Torres and Coakley scooped up five apiece in the winning effort.

Goalkeeper Fabienne Jules (Leominster, Mass.) turned away five shots and earned the win.

Grabowski picked up five groundballs in the losing effort for Elms, while Hurley made 18 of her 27 saves in the second period.

Elms concludes its regular season on Saturday, April 30 when it hosts New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) foe Westfield State University at 5:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
