12-Goal First Half Lifts Green Mountain College Past Women’s Lacrosse, 18-4

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior attacker Chelsey Grabowski (South Hadley, Mass.) netted a pair of second half goals, but Green Mountain College scored 12 goals in the opening period and used five goals by Amanda Malkin (Highland Lakes, N.J.) to help pace the Eagles to an 18-4 victory over the Blazers in Sunday afternoon's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms starts its season 0-1 overall, while Green Mountain improves to 2-0 on the season.

Green Mountain used a strong offensive surge in the opening 30 minutes as Emily Brillon (Westminster, Mass.) found the back of the net 1:26 into the contest.  Brillon added another score in the half, while Bryanna Astor (Milltown, N.J.), Amanda Posey (Columbus, Ga.), and Johanna Douglas (Essex, Conn.) netted two goals apiece. Malkin fired in three of her five goals in the first half to help the Eagles soar to a 12-0 lead.

With 4:54 remaining in the stanza, Elms' senior attacker Melissa Meon (South Hadley, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the season.

Green Mountain opened the scoring in the second half when Lara Baxter (Maybrook, N.Y.) found the nylon for the first of her two goals, before Blazers' junior attacker Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.) struck for her first score of the season setting the score at 13-2.

Douglas scored twice more to give Green Mountain a 15-2 advantage, before Grabowski scored at the 12:40 mark to make the score 15-3.

Baxter's second goal and Malkin's fifth score of the game gave the Eagles a 17-3 cushion before Grabowski struck for her second tally of the period with 6:40 remaining in the contest.

A free position shot goal by Green Mountain's Victoria Mullins (Neptune, N.J.) at the 4:50 mark capped the scoring giving the Eagles an 18-4 victory.

Eagles' goalkeeper Kelsy Allan (Jupiter, Fla.) turned away 10 shots to earn the victory, while Elms' junior goaltender Annette Dzidek (Chicopee, Mass.) collected nine saves in the losing effort.

Douglas scooped a game-best eight groundballs for Green Mountain, while Walsh and Meon added six groundballs each for Elms.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, March 19 when it travels to Mount Ida College for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game against the Mustangs.
