Women’s Basketball Falls to UMass-Dartmouth, 91-43

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Elms College women's basketball team fell to UMass-Dartmouth, 91-43 in Friday afternoon's season-opening non-conference women's basketball game at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic hosted by the Corsairs in North Dartmouth, Mass.

With the loss, Elms moves to 0-1 on the season, while UMass-Dartmouth starts its season 1-0 overall. ­­­Elms will play Framingham State University in the tournament consolation game at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, while UMass-Dartmouth will take on Castleton State College at 2:00 p.m. in the tournament championship game.

Elms was led by junior forward Denisha Parks (Fall River, Mass.) who scored a team-high 12 points and added three rebounds. Junior guard Gianna Youngblood (East Freetown, Mass.) netted nine points and hauled in a game-best six rebounds, while senior guard Marisabel Santiago (Springfield, Mass.) drained five points and picked up five boards off the bench.

Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) totaled a game-high 18 points to lead four starters in double figures for UMass-Dartmouth. Kesley Garrity (Somerville, Mass.) followed with 17 points and Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) and Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) contributed 13 and 10 points respectively.

Castantini and Bornemann added a game-best six rebounds each, while Ashley Brown (Fairhaven, Mass.) chipped in eight points off the bench for the Corsairs. Kane dished out five assists and she and Garrity collected three steals apiece.

UMass-Dartmouth shot 48.1-percent from the floor and 75-percent from the free throw line, while holding the Blazers to just 25.9-percent shooting from the field and 50-percent from the stripe. The Corsairs also forced Elms into 21 turnovers to help seal the victory.

UMass-Dartmouth built a 47-23 lead at intermission on the strength of a 20-2 run over the first 10:33 of the contest. The Corsairs pulled away in the second half, posting an 83-36 lead with 4:57 left to play to give UMass-Dartmouth its largest advantage of the game.
