Jonathan’s Late Strike Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Regis College, 3-2

Box Score

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore Ziggy Jonathan (Springfield, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Blazers to a thrilling 3-2 win over Regis College in Tuesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the win, Elms snaps a three-game losing skid and improves to 3-5 overall, 1-1 in league play, while Regis moves to 5-6 on the season, 1-2 in NECC action.

After Regis took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Josh Fidalgo (Dorchester, Mass.) in the 10th minute of play, neither side registered a score until the 49th minute when Jonathan scored the first of his two goals on a beautiful pass by junior midfielder Tavish Leland (Bridgton, Maine) to even the game at 1-1.

The Pride regained the lead when Jerry Alcius (Mattapan, Mass.), who assisted on Regis' first goal, found the back of the net himself at the 53:35 mark to give the Pride a 2-1 lead.

Two minutes later, Elms responded when Leland delivered a nice touch pass to sophomore defender Brendan Reed (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who blasted the ball to the top left corner of the net knotting the game at 2-2.

With time in regulation dwindling, Leland was in the right place at the right time once more, connecting with Jonathan for a second time in the 84th minute with what proved to be the game-clinching goal in the lower right corner of the net.

Regis' Angel Aguilar (Silver Spring, Md.) and Alcius added an assist each on Fidalgo's goal, while goalkeeper Andrew LaMacchia (Lynn, Mass.) turned away seven shots in the losing effort.

Blazers' senior goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) was stellar between the pipes, tallying seven saves en route to the victory.

Elms returns to NECC action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when it travels to Lesley University for an 8:30 p.m. contest.
