Men’s Soccer Falls to Southern Vermont College, 4-1

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore forward Ziggy Jonathan (Springfield, Mass.) scored a goal and senior goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) made 11 saves, but Southern Vermont College used two goals from Pierre Massena (Wayne, N.J.) to highlight four second half scores and lift the Mountaineers to a 4-1 victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms falls to 3-8 overall, 1-3 in league action, while Southern Vermont improves to 8-4 overall, 4-0 in NECC play.

After playing to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes, the sides exploded for five goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half.

Elms got on the board first when Jonathan scored on a feed from freshman forward Joseph Coleman (Easthampton, Mass.) at the 52:25 mark to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

Massena responded with his first goal at the 53:26 mark, before Chris Hansen (Raymertown, N.Y.) scored what stood as the game-winner just 21 seconds later to give Southern Vermont a 2-1 lead.

Massena scored again at the 54:24 mark before Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, N.Y.) capped the surge with a goal in the 58th minute of play.

Sullivan finished with six of his saves in the second half, while Mountaineers' goalkeeper Connor Anniello (Scotland, Conn.) recorded 11 saves as well with six coming in the first stanza.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Thursday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Mount Ida College at 4:30 p.m. at Leary Field.
