Blazer Field Hockey Earns National Statistical Champion Tag For Defensive Saves

Indianapolis, Ind. – The Elms College field hockey team rode a shutdown defense all the way to a New England Collegiate Conference championship in the fall. On Friday the Blazer defense was honored as an NCAA National Statistical Champion as the nation’s leader in defensive saves.

The Elms defense turned away 29 shots in 2017 to lead all 165 NCAA Division III field hockey teams. The Blazers will be honored with an official plaque from the NCAA for the achievement.

Alyssa Falvo led the NECC and ranked fifth in DIII with 11 defensive saves, while Chambrielle Genga-Richards added five and Marissa Mizzone and Carissa Ramirez each had three.

Elms tallied five shutouts on the season and allowed just one goal in its final five games, including back-to-back shutouts in the NECC semifinal and finals to claim the NECC crown.
