Second Half Surge Leads Colby Sawyer Past Field Hockey

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 3, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College field hockey team scored four times in the second half to pull away from Elms for a 7-2 victory, on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer evens its record at 1-1 and will continue its home stand with a contest against Anna Maria on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Elms, the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) preseason favorite, drops its season opener to go to 0-1. The Blazers travel to Keene on Saturday for a 10 a.m. start.

The Chargers got off to a quick start for the second straight game with a goal in the opening moments. Junior Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) found the back of the cage 1:11 into the contest to put Colby-Sawyer on top 1-0.

Freshman Sarah Morin (Pelham, N.H.) doubled the Chargers' lead with her first collegiate goal at 17:05.

Elms responded less than a minute later with a tally from sophomore Rebecca Hill (Guilford, Conn.). Freshman Carissa Ramirez (El Cajon, Calif.) set up the play with an assist.

The Blazers knotted the game at 2-2 with 3:13 left in the first half on a goal from junior Hayley Omahen (San Diego, Calif.).

The halftime score was destined to be 2-2, but Colby-Sawyer senior Paige Viens (Middlebury, Vt.) finished a one-timer from sophomore Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine) with 16.9 seconds left on the clock to send the Chargers to the break ahead 3-2.

Colby-Sawyer was able to pull away in the second half without allowing an Elms shot. The Chargers added four goals in the frame including tallies from Jones and Schuster. Jones added a pair of assists in the game. Freshman Julia Lanctot (Sandown, N.H.) and freshman Marissa Nance (Sanford, Maine) notched their first collegiate goals to add to the Colby-Sawyer total. 

Freshman goalie Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) got the win for Colby-Sawyer. Elms junior goalie Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) made four saves.
