Second Half Sinks Field Hockey At WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. - WPI received goals by four different scorers while senior Abby King (Fairfield, ME) and the defense helped junior Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) collect her third career shutout in a 4-0 win over visiting Elms in a non-conference field hockey contest Saturdaymorning in Alumni Stadium as part of Homecoming Weekend.

Senior Amanda Richards (Wilmington, MA) found the bottom left of the cage in at 32:24 for the 1-0 advantage at the break. The second half saw senior Izzy Garver (Owls Head, ME) put the Engineers up 2-0 with help from freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) at 37:10. Garver later setup a strike by senior Sabrina Guzzi (Suffield, CT) in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) made it 4-0 when she tipped it in following a flurry of action in front of the cage.

King earned a defensive save in the second half as Mushrall made her stop in the first half. As a team, WPI took 25 shots, including 13 of the 15 game's shots on-goal.

Junior Madison Messier (Warren, MA) had both shots – all on-goal – for Elms. Junior Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, CT) halted eight shots while junior Chamberielle Genga-Richards (South Windsor, CT) added a defensive save.

WPI heads to Worcester State Wednesday for a 7pm matchup. Elms hosts Lasell Tuesday at 7pm.
