CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College field hockey team shut out visiting Becker College, 4-0, in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest at Leary Field Saturday afternoon. The Blazers improve to 3-9 overall, and 2-0 in the NECC, while Becker dips to an 0-1 mark in conference and a 0-12 record on the season.

In the 8th minute of action, the Blazers cracked the scoreboard as sophomore Madison Gabel (Agawam, Mass.) found a loose ball in traffic and ripped a shot past Becker junior keeper Alexis Barry (Manchester, N.H.) to hand Elms a 1-0 advantage.

With less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, the Hawks had an opportunity to even the score on a penalty corner, but the Blazers used a crucial defensive saves from senior Alyssa Falvo (Wilbraham, Mass.) on the doorstep to keep Becker off the board. With 6:45 remaining in the half, the Blazers padded their cushion as Gabel played a ball up to junior Madison Messier (Warren, Mass.), who weaved through the Hawks defense and fired a shot to the back of the cage, staking Elms to a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless play during the second half, the Blazers picked up an insurance goal as Gabel dribbled along the goal line towards the cage and delivered a pass to the front of the goal, where junior Jeszenia McGuire (Brimfield, Mass.) knocked a shot inside the far post to put Elms on top 3-0. Elms notched their final tally of the day as freshman Evelyn DeVaux (Wethersfield, Conn.) knocked a pass up to McGuire, who drove along the goal line and beat Barry inside the far post to send Elms to the 4-0 win.

The Blazers edged the Hawks in the shot column, 14-10, during the contest. Elms junior keeper Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) made five saves in her first shutout of the season, while Barry stopped three shots for the Hawks.

The Blazers will look to remain in the win column when they host Union (N.Y.) in non-conference action at Leary Field Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Becker hosts Rivier in non-conference play at Alumni Field Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
