Baseball Splits Opening Day Action With Coast Guard, Caroll
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Elms College junior
right-hander Matt Wood (Feeding Hills, Mass.)
pitched five innings and struck out six batters to help lift the
Blazers to a 7-4 season-opening win over Coast Guard. Elms then
fell to Carroll University, 9-5 in Saturday's second baseball game
at the 2010 Gene Cusic Classic.
With its split, Elms starts the 2010 campaign 1-1 overall.
Game One - Coast Guard
Freshman outfielder Stephen Fisher (West Boylston,
Mass.) paced the Blazers' offense, reaching base five
times thanks to four walks and a hit by pitch, and scored two times
in the 7-4 win.
Junior shortstop Brendan Cordeiro (Berkley,
Mass.) provided the power at the plate, knocking in two
runs.
On the hill, Wood allowed just one earned run to complement his
six-strikeout effort.
Game Two - Carroll
In the 9-5 loss to Carroll, senior righty Dan
Ingraham (Granby, Mass.) was stellar on the mound through
the first four innings, fanning six batters, while allowing just
two runs.
Cordeiro went 2 for 5 at the plate with a pair of RBI, while
sophomore infielder Nicolino Iavicoli (Hampden,
Mass.) was 2 for 4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Senior infielder Mike Andrews (Greenfield, Mass.)
connected for two doubles and drove in a pair of runs in the losing
effort.
Elms returns to Gene Cusic Classic action on Sunday, March 7 when
it takes on Olivet at 6:00 p.m. in Fort Myers.
