HOLYOKE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore lefty Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) fanned 11 batters in eight scoreless innings on the mound to help lift the Blazers a 6-0 shutout victory against Newbury College in Tuesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball game at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass.

With the win, Elms improves to 10-19 overall, 5-7 in league play, while Newbury falls to 6-22 on the season, 4-8 in NECC action.

Elms took a 2-0 lead into the top of the eighth inning before extending its lead to 5-0 with a trio of runs. Senior designated hitter Brian Marrero (Kendall Park, N.J.) and junior catcher Carm Bonavita (Springfield, Mass.) notched back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, before junior right fielder Robert Reyome (Westfield, Mass.) laced an RBI single through the left side to score Marrero. Junior shortstop Brendan Cordeiro (Berkley, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Bonavita and Reyome into scoring position for freshman center fielder Stephen Fisher (West Boylston, Mass.) who delivered an RBI groundout to give Elms a 4-0 lead with Reyome on third. Reyome then scored on a passed ball to up the lead to 5-0, and senior third baseman Mike Andrews (Greenfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to keep the inning going before a groundout to the left side ended the rally for the Blazers.

In the top of the ninth, sophomore left fielder Donald Morse (Alfred, Maine) legged out an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout to the right side and then scored on a base hit down the left field line by Bonavita to lift the lead to 6-0.

Senior right-hander Dan Ingraham (Granby, Mass.) entered in relief in the bottom of the ninth frame and struck out two batters to seal the victory for Elms. LeBarron, who limited the Nighthawks to five hits in eight scoreless innings of work on the hill, improves to 3-3 on the season.

Newbury starter Jorge Pimentel (Winsted, Conn.) tossed eight innings and suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 overall.

Elms plated its first run of the contest in the top of the first when Cordeiro connected for an infield single, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the pitcher on the same play to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

Elms added to its edge in the top of the second when Marrero drew a two-out free pass and moved to second on a bunt single by Bonavita. A base hit up the middle off the bat of Reyome sent Marrero home with the Blazers' second run of the game.

Bonavita and Reyome each tallied three hits in the game and scored once, while Reyome was credited with two RBI.

Joseph Guidi (Derry, N.H.) led Newbury at the dish, going 3 for 4.

Elms returns to NECC action Friday, April 30 when it hosts Daniel Webster College for a single nine-inning game. First-pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass.
