Box Score

HOLYOKE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore left fielder Donald Morse (Alfred, Maine) went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI, but Daniel Webster College received a three-hit, two RBI game from Darrik Marstaller (Spofford, N.H.) to help lift the Eagles to a 9-4 victory over the Blazers in Friday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball game at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass.

With the loss, Elms falls to 10-20 on the season, 5-8 in league action, while Daniel Webster improves to 16-13, 9-4 in conference play.

Elms got off to a fast start, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning when junior shortstop Brendan Cordeiro (Berkley, Mass.) lined a base hit up the middle, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on an RBI groundout by senior infielder Mike Andrews (Greenfield, Mass.).

Daniel Webster answered, scoring nine runs over the next five innings to post a 9-1 lead after 7.2 innings.

The Eagles crossed the dish once in the second, and three times in third on the strength of a two-run blast to right field by Marstaller.

Daniel Webster tallied two more runs in the top of the fifth frame when Zach Cantor (Windham, N.H.) drove in Elliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) and Bruce Brown (Lowell, Mass.) with the fifth and sixth runs of the game for the Eagles.

A three-run seventh inning, highlighted by Marstaller's steal of home and an RBI single by Chris McKenzie (Burlington, Mass.) extended the lead to 9-1.

Blazers' sophomore second baseman Nicolino Iavicoli (Hamden, Conn.) sparked a one-out rally when he singled to right field, and following a strikeout, stole second base. A base hit to right off the bat of Morse sent Iavicoli home with the first of three runs in the stanza. A base knock by senior designated hitter Brian Marrero (Kendall Park, N.J.), and a sophomore Sean Shanley (Bristol, Conn.) hit by pitch loaded the bases. A base hit by senior right fielder Robert Reyome (Westfield, Mass.) sent two runners to the plate, cutting Elms' deficit to five before a groundout sealed the 9-4 victory for Daniel Webster.

Eagles starting pitcher Kory Kiro (Goffstown, N.H.) struck out five batters in 7.2 innings of work on the hill to earn the win and improve to 4-2 overall.

Elms starter Mike Bieber (Wading River, N.Y.) fanned seven hitters in the losing effort. He is now 1-5 on the season.

Iavicoli finished 2 for 4 at the plate, while junior catcher Carm Bonavita (Springfield, Mass.) earned two walks in the game.

Cantor and McKenzie each drove in a pair of runs for Daniel Webster, while McKenzie finished with two hits in the winning effort.

Elms and Daniel Webster return to NECC action on Saturday, May 1 in Nashua, N.H. for a doubleheader. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
