Malheiro and Basua Lead Women’s Soccer in GNAC Win over Sharks

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College Women's Soccer Team defeated Simmons University on Saturday afternoon on Leary Field in GNAC action.

 

BASICS

Score: Blazers 5 – Sharks 0 

Records:  Blazers (5-5) (4-4 GNAC) | Monks (0-9-1) (0-7-1 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

The Blazers got off to another fast start, finding the back of the net in the eleventh minute of the game. First Year Emily Basua (Oxnard, CA) received a pass from Grade Student Abby Goodnow (Goshen, MA) and placed a perfect shot far post. It took the home side only 40 seconds to double their lead, Sophomore Jamie McDonough (Dedham, MA) got on the end of a Kelly Malheiro (Long Island, N.Y.) cross, heading the ball into the back of the Sharks net. Elms would control the rest of the half, out- shooting Simmons 10-5.

 

The second half started the same way as the first with the Blazers being on the attack. It only took 10 minutes for Basua to net her second goal of the game and push the lead to 3-0. The First Year wasn't done and completed the hat-trick in the 62nd minute. Both of Basua's second half goals were assisted by Malheiro. Elms would add a fourth goal in the 64th minute, Sophomore Emily Kibler (Chicopee, MA) was sent in on goal from a pass off the foot of Junior Cassidy Langevin (Enfield, CT) and ripped a shot past the Sharks keeper securing her first collegiate goal and the 4-0 win for Elms.

  • Basua (8 shots, 3 Goals)

"GNAC points are always so important and difficult to get. We played really well for the full 90 minutes and scored some nice goals. It's great to see our players connecting well on the field and playing a very unselfish style of soccer."

 

UP NEXT:

The Blazers host Mitchell College on Wednesday 10/4 at 7p.m. on Leary Filed in more GNAC action. This will also be their Pink Out Game for cancer awareness.
