Women's Soccer Clips Wheelock in Regular Season Finale

BOSTON, Mass. - The Elms College women's soccer team registered a 6-1 win over Wheelock College in their regular season, and New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), finale Saturday afternoon. With the win, Elms finishes second in the conference, earning a first round home match in the NECC Championships.

After more than 12 minutes of scoreless play, the Blazers cracked the scoreboard as sophomore defender Kylen O'Hearn (Somers, Conn.) delivered an unassisted strike to stake Elms to a 1-0 advantage. With 1:10 remaining in the first half, sophomore midfielder Meeghan O'Connor (Fall River, Mass.) scored off a pass from senior forward Gina DiGiovanni (Springfield, Mass.), to push the Blazers lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.

Just over five minutes into the second frame, Elms continued their offensive onslaught as O'Hearn and O'Connor netted goals within a 1:10 span, padding the Blazers advantage to 4-0. In the 59th minute, Elms freshman midfielder Maggie Willette (Chicopee, Mass.) recorded her first career goal, scoring off an assist from freshman midfielder Erica Van Ness (Agawam, Mass.), extending the Blazers lead to 5-0. 

The Wildcats scored their lone tally of the contest on an unassisted goal from senior midfielder Rachel Noiseux (Merrimack, N.H.) in the 62nd minute. Elms freshman midfielder Madison Jung (Stafford Springs, Conn.) closed out the scoring for the Blazers, putting home a pass from freshman midfielder Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, Mass.), sending Elms to the 6-1 win.

The Blazers controlled the shot column, 21-8, during the contest. Elms junior goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) made a pair of saves in the win, while Wheelock sophomore goalie Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, Maine) stopped six shots for the Wildcats.

Elms wraps the 2014 regular season with 9-8-1 overall record, and an 8-1 mark in the NECC. Wheelock finishes the regular season at 3-14-1, and 1-8 in the NECC. The Blazers will host seventh-seed in the opening round of the NECC Championship Tuesdy night at Leary Field.
