WESTON, Mass. – The Elms College women's soccer team used a second half strike from sophomore defender Kylen O'Hearn (Somers, Conn.) to defeat host Regis College, 1-0, in their New England Collegiate Conference season opener at Regis Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers broke the scoreless tie in the 49th minute as O'Hearn capitalized on a turnover in the midfield, where she took the loose ball, streaked through the Pride defense, and fired a shot past Regis goalkeeper Rachael Gannon, to lift Elms to their eventual 1-0 win over the Pride.
In the shot category, the Blazers edged the Pride, 11-3, in the win. Elms junior goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (2-5; Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) stopped the lone shot she faced, while Gannon made a game-high seven saves for Regis.
The win pushes the Blazers record to 2-5 overall, and 1-0 in the NECC, while Regis dropped to 2-4-1, and 1-0 on the year. Elms will be back in action when they travel to Clark (Mass.) in a non-conference tilt Tuesday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
