Women’s Lacrosse Uses Second-Half Surge to Edge Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 10-8
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Elms College sophomore attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) netted a game-high five goals and the Blazers scored six in the second half of play to help stake a 10-8 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday evening.
With the win, Elms improves to 3-6 overall, while Mass. Maritime falls to 2-6 on the season.
Mass. Maritime held a one goal advantage (5-4) after 30 minutes of play thanks to scores from five different players.
McDonough found the back of the net once in the opening frame, while freshman attacker Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) added two scores and sophomore midfielder Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) delivered a scoring strike.
The Blazers exploded out of the gate in the second half as McDonough scorched the nylon with two markers at the 28:08 and 24:48 marks to give Elms a 6-5 lead. Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.) tied the game with her second goal of the contest just 16 seconds later but two more goals by McDonough extended the Blazers' lead to 8-6 with 17:20 to play.
Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) answered with her second tally of the game with 11:30 to play in the game pulling the Buccaneers to within one at 8-7 but strikes from senior attacker Chelsey Grabowski (South Hadley, Mass.) and Cava increased the advantage to 10-7 with 10:02 remaining in the game.
Mass. Maritime's Janine Prokscha (Washington, Conn.) found the back of the net with just under three minutes to play, but it was not enough as the Blazers held on for a 10-8 victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alysha Parsons (Newington, Conn.) turned away five shots in the winning effort, while Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) made 15 stops between the posts for the Buccaneers.
Elms' freshman defender Emily Brown (Agawam, Mass.) and senior defender Marcia Norat (Brockton, Mass.) scooped four groundballs for the Blazers. Prokscha led all players with six groundball pickups.
Elms is back in conference action when it travels to Daniel Webster College for league action at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 in Nashua, N.H.
