Elms Drops Double-Header To Westfield State

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College softball team dropped a pair of games against Westfield State on Wednesday, falling 12-0 in the opening game and 8-0 in the second-half of a non-conference double-header.

GAME 1 – Westfield State 12, Elms 0 (5 innings)
Blazer pitcher Lisa Lusardi sat down the Owls (3-9) in order in the top of the first inning, but the Westfield State bats came alive in the second. The Owls rallied for 11 runs off 11 hits in the second inning to stun the Blazers (3-9). Seven of the 11 runs in the big inning were earned, before a Blazer error aided another four unearned runs.

Elms struggled to get things going offensively in the game as a double by Elizabeth Olszewski (Canterbury, Conn.) and a single by Katelyn Sylvia (Southwick, Mass.) were the only Blazer hits.

Raeanna Tumel (Stafford, Conn.) came on in relief of Lusardi in the second inning and allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings pitched. WSU pitcher Emily Arrendondo (Woburn, Mass.) threw five innings of two-hit ball and struck out two Elms batters.

GAME 2 – Westfield State 8, Elms 0 (6 innings)
Two runs in the first and two more in the second were more than enough offense for Westfield State to clinch a double-header sweep of Elms in game two. The Owls added one in the fifth and three in the sixth anyways, and kept Elms off the scoreboard.

Tea Sullivan (Dracut, Mass.) went 1-for-2 at the plate to pick up the only Blazer hit of the game. Emily Woodworth (Marlborough, Mass.) tossed six innings and gave up just one hit while striking out three.

Tumel pitched 5.2 innings for Elms and gave up eight runs, including four earned runs. She struck out three batters.

Elms will play Newbury in a New England Collegiate Conference double-header on March 31. The games, originally scheduled to be hosted by Newbury, will be played at Cheryl R. Condon Field in Chicopee, Mass., but Newbury will be the home team.
