Elms Softball Picks Up Two Wins To Close Out Gene Cusic Classic

NAPLES, Fla. – The Elms College softball team won two games on Wednesday to close out the Gene Cusic Classic in Naples, Fla., starting the day with a 6-3 win over Waynesburg before earning a 4-0 shutout victory over New Jersey City University.
The Blazers won three out of their last four games to close the tournament, heading back to Chicopee with a 3-5 overall record.
Elms returns to action with a double-header at Anna Maria, who the Blazers beat 16-1 on Tuesday, on March 14.
GAME 1 – Elms 6, Waynesburg 3
Jeszy McGuire went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Blazers against Waynesburg. She singled home Catharine Wrang and Katelyn Sylvia in the third inning to put Elms ahead 3-0 and also added a double in the game.
Waynesburg tightened the gap with two runs in the bottom of the third inning before tying the game at 3-3 with another run in the bottom of the fourth. But the Blazers took control late, capitalizing on a Waynesburg error to score two runs in the top of the fifth.
Elms added another unearned run in the sixth for the 6-3 win. In all, only one of Elms' six runs was earned, as the Blazers took advantage of four Waynesburg errors in the game.
Raeanna Tumel relieved Elms starter Lisa Lusardi in a tie game in the fifth inning, and pitched three scoreless innings to pick up her first win of the year. Lusardi went four innings, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs, two of them earned.
GAME 2 – Elms 4, NJCU 0
Lusardi (2-3) tossed a complete-game shutout as the Blazers won their third game in four tries to wrap up the Gene Cusic Classic. Lusardi struck out two and did not allow a walk while scattering seven hits.
The Blazers got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second inning and tacked on another in the bottom of the third to pull ahead 2-0. Elms then picked up two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the decisive 4-0 lead.
Lusardi, Katelyn Sylvia, Wrang and McGuire each picked up RBIs in the game for the Blazers. Elizabeth Olszewski had a double and went 2-for-3 at the plate for Elms. Both teams finished with seven hits without committing an error.
